Go to the Apple () menu and select About This Mac. On most Mac models, the number is also engraved on the outside.

The model number should be engraved on the bottom or the device starting with the letter A, followed by four additional characters (e.g. A1234)

Does it turn on and does the operating system load properly? And, if it’s a MacBook, does it hold a charge?

Does your Mac start up and shut down normally? And when it’s turned on, do you see either the desktop, setup screen, or Disk utility?

If applicable to your model, this also means no keys are missing, the trackpad isn’t cracked, and the ports haven’t been tampered with. Enclosure warping or swelling are signs that a swollen battery may have damaged internal components.
